Independant Art Series Artist Statement
The Rolling Stones

The name of the project is The Rolling Stones because of the band I painted and each painting has the name of the band member. I painted a total of five paintings for the five band members of the band, Charlie Watts, Mick Jagger, Ronnie Wood, Bill Wyman, and Keith Richards. For my independent project I decided to do something different than what I would normally do, but something that I wanted to do for a long time to not only practice on painting portraits, but to paint something that I’m a fan of. I decided to paint a black and white series of paintings of each member of the Rolling Stones in a realistic art style.
The medium I used for this series is acrylics with round and square brushes with a variety of sizes for detail and texture. The process I usually used for painting was a free hand drawing and doing a general underpainting of the face and everything surrounding it, when the underpainting is dry I use the reference photo to paint a second layer, when it comes to painting the actual details of the painting, I usually go from darkest to lightest, so it’s easier to blend light to dark, and to make the lightest parts of the painting stand out. I decided to paint in black and white to have a better understanding of shading when it comes to figures, faces and shapes.
Somethings that I experienced while painting this series is the realization of importance of shading. I knew from the beginning that shading is an important part of realism and overall style of objects and figures, but painting in black and white really shows the importance of contrast and shading, and shading at times isn’t as easy as it seems with painting portraits. So I think the hardest thing about this series was having contrast and realistic shading in each painting, I also realized that having a large variety of dark and light shades helps the most with shading. Somethings I think I achieved is the overall contrast of the painting, I think the main subject really stands out and the background isn’t too distracting from the main subject, I think the use of black and white make certain parts of the painting really stand out and add focus to the viewers eyes, I also think the skin tones and the variety of shades in the color look nice with the painting. If I was to do this series again I would change the position of the portrait and possibly changing the size to a smaller canvas, I would like either all paintings in landscape view or in portrait view, and to make things easier for detail I think a smaller canvas would make things easier, I would also like to add extra detail to certain parts of the painting to achieve a realistic look.
This is my CV. Here I post about my art skills

The VAM Academy is an experience to explore all kinds of different arts. People get to learn and experience new media's of Art and try new things, and to learn more about what kind of art they enjoy best, and would like to carry with them throughout the future. Crystal joined the VAM Academy to try new media's of Art, and to improve on the media's of Art she loves best to consider later in the future. The personal project for the Academy is to take what media you have explored this year, and to create a series of work based on a topic of any media that you like. You get to decide and express what you love doing best, carry that throughout the years if you like. Crystal is in the VAM Academy, grade 10 of WH croxford. She is interested in painting, drawing, and creative writing. She enjoys writing that is more fictional and that is story based. Crystal’s personal project consists a series of landscape paintings and surrealist artworks of six. She decided to base some of her artworks on surrealism because it was inspired on her last history project, and she was inspired by an original artist of surrealism Salvador Dali. She enjoys the oddness and the abstract side of art, so she decided to add to her personal project.
She used acrylic in canvas for a medium and there is a variety of colors and style to the painting, and different techniques that were added to the paintings. Crystal had learned a lot of things and techniques while working on her personal project. She used pallet knives, flat brushes and fan brushes. The pallet knives in added great texture to the painting, added even mixing and opaque color, and an even spread on the canvas. The flat brushes added and even blending to the painting to characteristics that are more even and less textured (the sky). The fan brushes add extra texture to painting and even blending to extra parts of the painting. From this experience she learned more about the importance of time and making use of it, and how to pay attention to detail.

Art wise I am interested in painting, drawing, poetry & story writing. I'm presenting some of my best art pieces so far this year. I am featuring an oil pastel piece & two of my best blurred motion photography photos as well as the Who Am I? assignment. My mixed media project explains my personality & who I am as a person. It demonstrates things that are important to me as well as things that are good about me & things that are not so good about me in general. From making my piece I learned that I should hand in things on time & stay on task more often to get projects & assignments finished. Because it is a multi media project I used a mix of markers, acrylic paints, tissue paper & photography photos to create it.
